Overview

Love Island is a massive title on the Peacock streaming service and a significant contributing factor to their subscriber count. Because the show airs practically live, every day of the week (except hump day), there’s a lot of hype and anticipation for viewers. However it also introduces unique challenges, requiring edits to be produced practically day-of while the topic remains relevant. As footage comes in from Fiji, Peacock quickly works with 50GB episodes to piece together cutdowns and spots.

Since acquiring the title under “Love Island USA”, seasons 5, 6, and 7 were distributed solely through Peacock. This also includes spin-offs like Love Island Games, Love Island Beyond the Villa (essentially a never ending campaign for the marketing department). In addition to working on the majority of Season 7 GFX, I edited multiple spots, and Art Directed a variety of static and motion OOH placements.

My Edits + Hero Spots

The intention of the spot below was to showcase a new feature on the mobile platform called “Bite-Sized Clips”. I edited this spot from start to finish, using footage from various episodes and an EPK shoot with Ariana Madix. I then comped in a product based screen capture, on a mobile device. We later expanded upon this design, using the 3D phone and also tried bringing the UI outside of the device, as a 9×16 screen can frequently look limited in a 16×9 frame.

Meet The Islanders

Summary

Each year Peacock produces a “Meet The Islanders” spot to introduce the cast to the public. Instead of just using basic lower-thirds, this year we pushed it a little further and tracked/rotoscoped their names around the talent. This edit was completed in one weekend because we received the footage shortly after the shoot in Fiji.

Title
Love Island Tease

Summary

Because the cast is not officially selected until moments before shooting begins, this tease features Ariana (as the host) and faceless islanders. This fortune-teller tease introduced unique purple colors which required some custom end cards. I designed and versioned these out over footage. The Love Island IP is very protective over how the heart is represented.

Instacart Partnership

Summary

The partnership between Instacart, Love Island, and Peacock playfully introduced “Carl”, a new “islander” delivering groceries to Ariana. This required some custom GFX in the style of the show. I didn’t have a working in-show GFX toolkit available so I had to recreate it the “THIS SEASON” title card, as well as the custom end page.

Summary

Similar to the “Bite-Sized Clips” spot above, I edited this product spot from start to finish, featuring the all new “Mini-Games” – specific to the mobile platform. I color corrected the EPK shoot of Ariana and edited in the product screen-capture alongside clips from various episodes from Season 7.

OUT OF HOME

Subway Triptych

Working closely with Art Machine, I helped Art Direct the motion for various OOH placements, similar to the Subway Triptych. The Peacock static design team helped build out two pieces of art for Season 7: the hero art (below), and the selfie-art.
Both were used in various capacities.

OUT OF HOME

Times Square

I worked with Art Machine to help animate the cinema-graph at the end which features the “selfie-art”. The idea is Ariana is extending her arm out off frame and taking a selfie, while holding the heart in her left hand. Due to timelines, if we wanted to use footage in this placement we had to default to the teaser (with no audio).

The Now – Digital Wrap

This was a very similar placement as Times Square above, but completely new to Peacock as a media buy. The screen actually wraps around to the bottom and I noticed other advertisers frequently blurred out the colors/imagery from above. This was a very tight deadline so we weren’t able to do something more bespoke.

Additional Placements

Just as Love Island Season 7 was wrapping up Peacock started to prepare for a new series, Love Island: Beyond The Villa, which kept the hype going. I animated the graphics in the spot below, allowing for a smooth transition between the beach setting to the sunset backdrop. This was then versioned out across all aspect ratios.

LA Live

This Olympic and Figueroa intersection (outside of LA Live) had always been a static placement and was only recently replaced with digital screens. I worked with Art Machine to bring motion to the art reveal, which was quickly designed by the Static Design team. The key detail is to make sure messaging is present on both sides as viewers are typically in a vehicle, and not standing at the corner across the street.
