Overview

Working alongside the Unscripted Title Marketing team I helped market and design Peacock’s first exclusive “Live Comedy Event” (not broadcasted on linear television). Outside of SNL Weekend Update, Colin Jost & Michael Che occasionally perform standup. As hosts of this comedy special at The Bell House in Brooklyn, New York, multiple unknown guest stars were set to drop-in.

In partnership with Art Machine, Trailer Park, and the infamous SNL photographer Mary Ellen Matthews, my focus was on designing the Key Art used across the campaign. Although we were limited to a stage setting in 30 Rock (for both static and AV), we were able to photograph Colin and Michael in person. I also Art Directed GFX used in AV spots and OOH placements such as Peacock Place (LA Live).

Hero Spot

Because this was a live comedy special, producers wanted to capture Colin Jost and Michael Che talking about the event to camera in a casual nature (this not unlike how hosts tease their guest appearance on SNL). Unfortunately because there were a lot of unknowns prior to the shoot (such as the venue), they were placed in front of green screen with a brick wall comped in later. I worked on GFX with Trailer Park and gave direction on the relatively wordy title.

STATIC DESIGN

Key Art

At the shoot with Mary Ellen Matthews and talent (in 30 Rock), there was a desire to go outside and have Colin and Michael sit in the back of a pedicab to bring some comedic elements into the frame. Executives made it clear they didn’t want this to feel like an SNL Event (so no tuxedos or streaks of city lights in the background).

Working with Art Machine we did have a pretty fun concept of the two riding the subway with a slice of pizza in-hand, like they’re on their way to the event. But in the end we went the safe route, creating a “NYC comedy club vibe”- brick wall, stage, mic/stool, and neon lights. I also helped bring some motion into the final art which was repurposed across several OOH placements.

LA Live – Plaza

Designing for Peacock Plaza (or LA Live) seemed to present a fun opportunity to really lean in on the NYC comedy club nature of the IP. The Plaza alone is comprised of many different oddly shaped and positioned screens so I wanted to leverage the neon glow when possible – especially along the “vertical mesh” on The Ritz-Carlton Hotel. This helped pushed the “LIVE” nature of the event.

Times Square

This a horizontal cinemagraph of the hero art that was repurposed for this large Times Square placement – thanks to the help of Art Machine. Note: The eyebrow that usually sits above title is “Peacock Original”. In this case it was changed to “A PEACOCK LIVE COMEDY EVENT” and was later repurposed for the SNL50 The Homecoming Concert.
